Bone Grafting

Dental bone grafting is a surgical procedure used to replace lost or damaged bone structures. It involves the transfer of bone tissue to an area of defect to restore normal anatomy. At Roberson Dental, we use donor and synthetic bone graft material. Both have been proven safe and effective. These sources allow Dr. John Roberson to not have to create a second surgical site in the patient to harvest bone for the graft. This procedure can be performed for cosmetic or functional reasons, such as restoring facial symmetry, maintaining bone height and width to receive dental implants, protecting and preventing bone loss on adjacent teeth after tooth extraction, and improving bite strength after tooth loss. Bone grafting has become an increasingly popular option in recent years owing to its effectiveness and minimal risk as compared to other treatments. Many applications for bone grafting are provided by Dr. John Roberson at our office. Some patient’s need more extensive bone graft procedures, in which case our team will refer you to one of our trusted Oral Surgeons or Periodontists that we refer to who specialize in those particular types of bone grafting procedures.

What to expect during bone grafting

Most of the applications for which Dr. John Roberson recommends a bone graft involves graft placement after an extraction. After the tooth is gently removed, bone graft material is placed in the socket, and sutures are used to close the site.

Once the grafting procedure is complete, it takes about three to six months for the grafted area to heal and integrate with the existing bone structure. During this time, patients should follow the instructions provided to optimize healing and prevent any complications. Generally speaking, this includes eating soft foods, avoiding alcohol and tobacco use, and brushing gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Why might I need dental bone grafting?

People who need dental bone grafting are those who have lost bone anatomy around their teeth or need to prevent bone loss after tooth extraction for a future restoration or to protect the stability of adjacent teeth. This could be because of an accident, tooth loss, or other reasons. If your doctor thinks dental bone grafting is right for you, they will explain how it works and what to expect during recovery.

Dental bone grafting can be used for both functional and cosmetic reasons. It can help restore a healthy, stable bite, and improve facial symmetry. It is also a great way to ensure that implants or crowns have enough structure to integrate with surrounding bone, leading to a successful outcome.
